History & Notes: When Jim Reddick worked as a guard at the Old Idaho Penitentiary, an inmate made this skillfully crafted purse as a gift for Jim's wife in 1966.While incarcerated, inmates exhibiting good behavior were given privileges in the Penitentiary hobby shop where leather working was popular. Jim later donated the purse to the Idaho State Historical Society in 1997.
Description: Heavy brown leather purse. Embossed with horse heads on the front and back. Laced front flap with brass turn buckle. Braided short handle with two silver collars. Interior has two zippered pockets. Beneath front flap is further tooling depicting a horse in mountain landscape. Traces of dye on front.
