History & Notes: This hat was owned by Mrs. W.F. Goodwin and was purchased before Idaho was awarded statehood. Mrs. Goodwin was born at Corning, Missouri in 1859 and came to Idaho when she was two years old. For a time, she and her family lived in Upper Weiser country where native peoples and Euro-American settlers sometimes came into conflict. Indians tried to trade ponies for the young Mrs. Goodwin, a "pretty little golden haired girl," recalled the donor. "...That failing they tried abduction." Mrs. Goodwin later moved to Boise where she passed away in 1908.
