History & Notes: In 1954, Idaho first lady, Lucille Smylie, wore this "nylon tulle ball gown of pink champagne...and embroidered brocade" for the inaugural ball held in honor of her husband, newly elected governor Robert Smylie. Robert would proceed to serve three consecutive terms with Lucille by his side. Much beloved by the citizens of Idaho, Lucille was a compassionate woman with a love for beautiful clothing and accessories. In 1966, she began what she hoped would become a gubernatorial tradition where Idaho's governors and first ladies could gift their inaugural finery to the Idaho State Historical Society. Many first ladies and their families have since followed suit enhancing a legacy honoring the men and women who have held the state's highest office.
Description: Floor length ball gown with full ombre pink skirt and pale pink satin brocade bodice. Sleeveless straps were worn by the Lucille Smylie draped off the shoulders. Bodice is boned, ruched and studded with rhinestones. Peplum of bodice is reinforced with buckram and flares over the hips. Layers of pink to cream nylon net fall over pink underskirt. Back zip closure ends in over sized draped bow of rhinestone studded brocade.
